Exploring Wai’ao and Living at Oh La La Surf House – An inside perspective

On the eighth of May, Mahina, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate, landed in Taiwan. This would be the first time she had ever left her home country (Japan) to live and work in a place where she didn’t speak the language.

She captures her experience living at Oh La La Surf House and exploring Wai’ao in Yilan County, meeting amazing people along the way, living just a 3-minute walk from the ocean, eating traditional Taiwanese cuisine, enjoying local festivals, and, last but definitely not least, going surfing!

To give some background, Mahina has been posting YouTube videos for the past year, recounting and showing her life through the lens of a young woman growing and learning. She’s taught herself English through video journals and has come so incredibly far already. I am deeply inspired by her, and I also think she paints a wonderful picture of this special part of Taiwan.
